Playa Guardalavaca is in our opinion the best of the five, there are two big hotels (Brisas and Club Amigo) at this beach but you don't need to be a hotel guest to enjoy the beach. The total beach is three kilometers long and divided into three sectors: Hotel Club Amigo Guardalavaca (560 m), the Brisas Guardalavaca (440 m) and the public beach to the east.
It's a hour drive from Holguin by a very good road. Both hotels are linked together by a park. You can park your care safe here and for free. We advise you to follow the signs "Playa" and park at the left of the supermarket. This is the public part. Here you find stairs to the beach. There is also a little dinner at the beach where you can get drinks and a small meal.
There are two legends concerning the origin of the name. First, the Spanish word vaca meaning cow, in pirate slang a cow means a burial site for their treasure chests. The second is the expression guardalavaca which the peasants shouted as an alarm about pirates approaching ... hide your cows! After weeks or even months at sea the pirates had grown an appetite for a nice steak!
